SOUTHERN COAL PARTNERSHIP WITH ITS LOCAL COMMUNITY, INGWE PRIMARY SCHOOL AND ZAMOKHULE CRÈCHE

Southern Coal believes in engaging with its local community, not only by endeavouring to ensure that it provides the majority of the company’s staff, but Southern Coal also ensures that it supports the community’s education of it youth, by investment and donations to its crèche (Zamokhule) and primary school (Ingwe Primary).

Each year Southern Coal engages with the community to discuss their needs. Projects are then programmed, funded and overseen by the company; Southern Coal believes in actively involving itself in its social development projects so to maximise their impact.

To date, Southern Coal has supported its community with the following projects:

  • Construction of a new perimeter fence to secure Ingwe school grounds

  • Donated solar lamps for an entire year group at Ingwe

  • Construction of a new main building for Zamokhule

  • Donated various learning aids, toys and a kitchen equipment for Zamokhule

  • Donated climbing frames and jungle gyms for Zamokhule

  • Constructed new paved areas for Ingwe.

  • Donated photocopying machine.

In addition to supporting Ingwe and Zamokhule, Southern Coal has also made the following donations:

 

  • Donation of gardening tools, equipment and seeds

  • Donation of football equipment and clothing

  • Donation to support community sewing club

SOUTHERN COAL SUPPORTS LEARNERSHIPS & ENTERPRISE SUPPORT

Since 2017 Southern Coal has supported 6 local entrepreneurs by awarding financial donations to their new businesses.  The new businesses are all based in or around in Newcastle, KZN where Southern Coal’s head office is located.  The businesses supported to date are:

  • Beauty and hair salon

  • Building contractor

  • Environmental Consultant

  • Leather goods designer and manufacturer

  • Transport company

  • Poultry farmer

  • Welding business

  • Tuck shop

  • Catering business
